There are very few traction applications for which the e-Traction® System might be less suitable. While our systems will nearly always produce an environmental and an economic benefit, the initial cost of the combined components may prove to be a handicap as an alternative for low mileage and fuel efficient vehicles.

An article in the U.S. magazine Autoweek highlights this point when it compared its long term usage test of the Toyota Prius with that of the Honda Civic LX. Whereas the Prius had an average fuel mileage of 43 MPG while the Civic managed 33 MPG. Factoring in the prevailing fuel price at the time and the non subsidized price of both vehicles, they determined that it would take 333,333 miles for the owner to break even in the incremental cost of the Prius.

Once the production cost of the e-Traction® System is reduced through mass production, it will become a serious alternative for newly designed vehicles. A retrofit of existing vehicles is quite possible, due to the cost of conversion will most likely only "pay out" on high usage and/or low fuel mileage vehicles such as SUV's and delivery vans.

The SKF-HFO and People Mover initiatives were motivated by the simplicity of the e-Traction® System and its influence on the environment. The Container Transporter, that is currently being studied by a number of potential users, is both good for the environment and the bottom line. The RO/RO vehicle will allow our dual-electric tractor to operate with zero emissions inside the cargo hold of a vessel.
